Restoring the Adrenals - Insufficiency Due to Chronic Stress

Our stress response involves a host of hormones and bio-chemical reactions that prepare our bodies for fight or flight. When the immediate threat has passed our systems begin to regulate and adrenaline subsides. However, cortisol, our primary stress hormone, remains to aid in tissue repair for any injuries and to release glucose for energy, endurance and increased uptake to the brain. Dysregulation of this protective process occurs when the threat, or stress remains as is common in our modern “go go go” lifestyles, where we experience chronic sympathetic nervous system activation, keeping cortisol in constant demand.

Excess cortisol wrecks the immune system, inhibits proper digestion, alters metabolism and robs the body of minerals and protein. Eventually this can lead to “burn-out” with inadequate quantities of cortisol. Our reproductive hormones and our “fountain of youth” hormone DHEA can also decline. A host of further issues may then occur, including a heightened histamine response, fatigue and/or “crashing”, decreased resilience, anxiety and nervousness, loss of motivation and depression.

Warning signs:

Constant tiredness, drowsy on waking, brain fog/memory problems, hormone imbalance, low libido, dry skin, dark circles under eyes, feeling overwhelmed, mood disorders, carbohydrate and sugar cravings, increased requirement of stimulants, weak immune system/recurrent infections/frequent illness, inability to handle stress, dizziness, allergies (food, seasonal, or environmental), lower back pain, headaches, joint pain, and weight gain - especially around the mid-section.

DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS

Limit carbs and sugar, moderate protein and increase good fats and antioxidants.

Support kidney qi with black and dark blue/purple-coloured foods such as blueberries, black rice, red/black quinoa, black kale, and seaweed

Take bone broth & collagen for easily digested proteins and to restore minerals

Curb sweet cravings and support microbiome with sauerkraut and apple cider vinegar

Add nutmeg and cinnamon to improve sleep, digestion and blood sugar metabolism

HERBS

Ashwaganda lowers cortisol, raises DHEA, reduces cravings, improves sleep, skin, metabolism and your immune system

Rhodiola reduces cortisol, boosts energy and helps adaption to physical stresses such as altitude and time zone changes

Siberian Ginseng increases endurance, cognitive function, and boosts immune system

Liquorice combats burnout (but is contraindicated with certain medications and hypertension)

OTHERS: Schisandra, Astragalus, Macca, Reishi, Shilajit, Vitamin C & B complex, Magnesium and essential oils (Lavender, Rosemary, and Holy Basil)
